India is set to bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships after dropping its earlier intention to host the 2027 edition of the prestigious tournament, a top official of the national federation said on Sunday.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) was earlier considering to bid for the hosting rights of the 2027 World Athletics Championships but it is now learnt that it has dropped the plan and is instead looking to host the 2029 edition.
"Yes, we are interested in bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships," AFI senior Vice President Anju Bobby George told PTI, on the sidelines on the sidelines of the AFI Annual General Body meeting.
"India has expressed interest to host the 2036 Olympics and 2030 Youth Olympics. So, it will be very good if we can host the 2029 World Athletics Championships," said the legendary long jumper.
The time period for the formal bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships is not known yet. The World Athletics has published the bidding timeline for the 2027 World Athletics Championships -- which began early this year -- but not for the 2029 edition.
The last edition of the World Athletics Championships was held in Budapest, Hungary in August and the next one will be held in 2025 in Tokyo.

The left-arm seamer has been profligate at the death in T20Is for more than one year and after giving away 37 runs in his first three overs on Sunday, no one would have thought that he would be able to defend just 10 with the dangerous Matthew Wade on strike.
"I gave away too many runs but God gave me another chance and the support staff believed in me. To be honest, nothing was going in my mind. Surya bhai told me whatever has to happen will happen," a beaming Arshdeep said at the end of the match, having nailed those block-hole deliveries, giving away only three runs.

The Apex Council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will meet on July 7 to discuss Team India's participation in Asian Games 2023 for both men and women.
The BCCI is expected to send its Men's 'B' team and Women's main team for the tournament, starting September 23 in Hangzhou, China.
Another agenda of the meeting will be sponsorship and media rights. The BCCI had announced the release of an Invitation to Tender for National Team Lead Sponsor Rights after Ed-Tech major BYJU's exit.
BCCI will also discuss the playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament. According to reports, the Impact Player Rule is likely to be addressed during the meeting.

An Air Force corporal, who was preparing for the National Shooting Championships, lost his thumb in a bizarre explosion at Delhi's Karni Singh range.

A national-level shooter partially lost his left thumb when the 10m air pistol cylinder he was filling with compressed air exploded at the Karni Singh Range.
The incident, which left everyone shocked, occurred on Saturday evening.
Pushpender Kumar, a corporal with the Indian Air Force, was training at the shooting range for the National Championships, currently underway in Bhopal when he suffered severe damage to his left thumb, which required immediate hospitalisation.
He is currently admitted to the Indian Army's R&amp;R hospital here.
A national coach told PTI on condition of anonymity that while Pushpender was filling compressed air into the pistol cylinder from the main cylinder, the incident happened.
Air pistols and air rifles have a sleek gas cylinder attached just below the barrel. When the shooter presses the trigger, the compressed gas in the cylinder is released, which hits a hammer inside the air gun, ejecting the lead pellet.
The air pistol's cylinder has to be filled after a certain number of shots with the help of a compressor or a portable cylinder.
Earlier, carbon dioxide used to be the preferred gas to fill the cylinders but with the advancement in technology, compressed air cylinders, which look like smaller versions of LPG cylinders, are used to fill the air pistol cylinders.
Pushpender belongs to the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh and, while he has not competed in internationally, he is a senior member of the IAF team.
He had lost his mother nearly a month back.
"We are hopeful Pushpender will make 90-95 per cent recovery post surgery," said the coach.
"Air pistol cylinders have to be replaced after a certain period of time and the gun manufacturers do it for free. Thankfully, Pushpender's shooting arm is safe." The coach added that he had not come across such an incident in his career "though (gun) vendors say such incidents do happen".
It is not known whether the air pistol was personal or belonged to the Air Force.
"It is sad that he will not be able to compete in the national championships currently underway in Bhopal. His mother had passed away some 15-20 days back. As far as I know, he has not played internationally. He usually trains at the Karni Singh range in Delhi," the coach added.
The coach said that international rifle shooter from Meerut, Ravi Kumar, who is also with the IAF, was with Pushpender at the Army hospital to take care of him.
Kumar, a World Cup bronze medallist, told PTI that Pushpender is doing well post surgery and should be released from hospital soon.
"He is doing fine and should be discharged in the next 2-3 days," said Kumar.
Another pistol coach at the Karni Singh range said that it is important that air pistol and rifle shooters replace their gun cylinders every 10 years or as directed by the weapon manufacturer.
"There is a possibility of a mishap if the refill cylinders are not replaced as directed by the manufacturers. I don't know the exact cause of the blast but one should not take it lightly as once the validity expires anything can happen," he said on condition of anonymity.
"Pushpender is a good shooter and I have known him for a long time. What I have been told is that he has undergone a major surgery. He is around 28-30 years old. Usually what happens is that the pressure gauge indicator on the air weapon's cylinder starts malfunctioning, giving incorrect reading. It leads to overfilling of the cylinder, which causes it to burst," he added.&nbsp;

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has instructed Jofra Archer to skip next year's Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to manage the injury-prone pacer's workload in the run-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, according to a report.
Archer, who was bought by Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2022 IPL for a whopping INR 8 crore, was released by the franchise last week. His name doesn't figure in the list of players who have registered for the IPL auction, set to be held on December 19 in Dubai.
Archer, who has been plagued by multiple injuries, suffered a recurrence of his elbow stress fracture while playing for MI during the IPL in May. The 28-year-old Barbados-born cricketer hasn't played any professional cricket since then and also missed the ODI World Cup.

As per the report, he has signed a new two-year contract with the ECB and ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 next year, the board has "opted to take as much control over Archer as possible." Archer had briefly travelled to India for the World Cup but returned to the UK after less than a week due to elbow pain. ECB is hopeful that the pace spearhead will be a part of England's squad for the T20 World Cup "We take that bet with him that we want him back fit and able to play for England, because of the upside," former England opener and current managing director (men's cricket) Robert Key had said last month "You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup&hellip; Jofra adds so much to that," he had said back then.
As many as 34 England players, including Harry Brook, Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes, have registered for the IPL auction.
While the likes of Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Jason Roy, Mark Wood, Will Jacks and Reece Topley have been retained by their franchise.

After Virat Kohli opted out of the limited-overs leg of India&rsquo;s tour of South Africa, his inclusion in the upcoming T20 World Cup remains uncertain.
Speaking on Kohli&rsquo;s chances for the marquee tournament, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said that the 35-year-old will have to show he is a better pick than the youngsters who are currently playing.
Manjrekar said the selection dilemma also extended to Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, both of whom may be considered for captaincy in the T20 World Cup.
&ldquo;I believe the approach should be extremely simple. We have played a lot of World Cups and haven't been able to win them,&rdquo; the former cricketer said on Star Sports.
The Kohli-Rohit duo has been missing from all Indian T20I squads since the 2022 World Cup in Australia.With notable performances from younger top-order batters like Shubhman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal in recent times, the selection committee is spoilt for choices at the moment.

South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, and pace maestro Kagiso Rabada have been rested for the white-ball segment of the upcoming series against India. The duo is slated to make their return for the two Test matches, with a strategic focus on red-ball cricket.
The Proteas are set to host India for a comprehensive series, featuring three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, commencing with the T20 format on December 10 in Durban.
Cricket South Africa clarified the decision, stating, "Captain Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada are amongst a group of players that have been omitted for the white-ball leg of the tour in order to play red-ball cricket as emphasis is placed on the Test series for which both will return."
During Bavuma's absence in the white-ball fixtures, Aiden Markram will assume the captaincy responsibilities.
The Test squad welcomes wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs for the first time, while Heinrich Klaasen is excluded from the red-ball squad.
Notably, pacers Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi have been excluded from the ODIs, marking a low priority for the format after the 50-over World Cup. However, the trio will be part of the squad for the T20Is and Test matches that follow the ODI series.
Given the significance of World Test Championships points and the upcoming T20 World Cup, both South Africa and India have introduced new faces in their ODI squads. This includes the uncapped pair of medium pacer Ottniel Baartman and all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana. Additionally, David Bedingham (Test) and pacer Nandre Burger (all three formats) have earned their maiden national call-ups.
