Commonwealth Games 2022 : A risky decision by the ICC and Commonwealth Games organisers!

Australian cricketer Tahlia McGrath was allowed to participate in the gold medal match against India despite testing positive for Covid-19.

McGrath, who showed mild symptoms of the virus, returned a positive test on Sunday. However, the Commonwealth Games Australia allowed her to participate in the match after consultation from CWG medical experts group, Cricket Australia confirmed in a statement. Her participation was also approved by the International Cricket Council.

The Australian board further said that to minimise the risk of transmission a range of comprehensive protocols have been put in place which will be observed throughout the game and for post-match activity.

The Aussie all-rounder did not line up for the national anthem and was seen sitting alone in the stands. However, McGrath who was dismissed after scoring only 2 came out to bat without the mask.

In the 2nd innings too, McGrath came out to field without the mask. She caught Shafali Verma and was seen celebrating the catch at a distance from her teammates.

Even though the safe distance was maintained, many are wondering whether she should have been allowed to play at all, considering the virus spreads rapidly and is transmissible through air. It puts not just her teammates, but the opposition members at risk as well.
