Football legend Pele dies aged 82

One of the most commanding sports figures of the last century, Brazil's legendary footballer Pele breathed his last on December 29 as he passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old.

One of the greatest footballers to have graced the beautiful game, Pele, was suffering from bowel cancer. He was admitted to the hospital on November 29 to re-evaluate his cancer treatment and was later diagnosed with a respiratory infection.

He had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and was receiving medical treatment since then.

Pele won FIFA World Cup titles three times during his playing career. His first World Cup triumph came in 1958 when he was just 17 years old, and then again in 1962 and 1970.

The legendary Brazillian striker scored 77 goals in 92 games and was widely regarded as one of the best players of all time.
