Akshay Bhatia Faces Challenges at BMW Championship

Owings Mills, August 15 (PTI): Indian-American golfer Akshay Bhatia faced challenges in his quest to qualify for the Tour Championship for the second consecutive year. He opened the BMW Championship, the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, with a 5-over 75, placing him tied for 46th out of the 49 players who started.

Bhatia struggled to find consistency, losing a shot on the fifth hole and suffering a double bogey on the sixth. He managed to pull back slightly with a birdie on the ninth, but further bogeys on the 12th, 14th, and 16th holes left him at 75 for the round. Currently positioned just outside the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, Bhatia needs to improve his position to secure a spot at East Lake for the Tour Championship.

Meanwhile, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre showcased exceptional form at the Caves Valley Golf Club, finishing his opening round with a remarkable 8-under 62, seizing a three-shot lead. MacIntyre's performance included a birdie on the first hole and a bogey on the second, complemented by further birdies on the fourth and seventh for a front nine score of 2-under.

The back nine witnessed MacIntyre's brilliance as he birdied the 11th before losing a stroke on the 12th. He then produced a stunning sequence of six consecutive birdies from the 13th to the 18th, highlighted by a thrilling 66-foot putt on the 15th that captivated the spectators. The 28-year-old finished the day three strokes ahead of England's Tommy Fleetwood, who delivered a flawless 65 without any bogeys.

Fleetwood sits comfortably in second with a 5-under par, recovering impressively after a challenging finish last week, where he narrowly missed a playoff at the FedEx St Jude Championship. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, also in excellent form, closed his round with a solid 66, securing third place with a late surge, recording birdies on the 15th, 16th, and 18th after a weather delay.

Scheffler started strong with initial birdies and once again proved his skill in the final four holes despite a brief setback with bogeys on the ninth and tenth. Viktor Hovland, Ben Griffin, and Rickie Fowler completed their rounds with 67, trailing just behind the leaders.

Other notable competitors include Rory McIlroy, who carded a 70, and defending champion Patrick Cantlay, who finished with a 72. The BMW Championship features the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings, with each shot crucial as players vie for a part of the USD 20 million purse and a prized spot in the season finale.
