Yuki Bhambri Reaches US Open Men's Doubles Quarterfinals

New York, Sep 3 (PTI) Yuki Bhambri has achieved a significant milestone by reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, advancing to the last-eight stage of the US Open men's doubles event alongside partner Michael Venus.

The duo, seeded 14th in this prestigious Indo-New Zealand combination, impressively defeated the fourth-seeded German pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz with a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-4, in a match that lasted one hour and 23 minutes.

Their next challenge will be against Croatia's Nikola Mektic and American veteran Rajeev Ram, who are the 11th seeds in the tournament.

Bhambri, who has faced numerous injuries throughout his singles career and is currently 33, never progressed beyond the first round in singles. However, his performance in doubles has shown marked improvement this year.

This includes reaching the third round of both the French Open and Wimbledon.

In contrast, Indian representatives at the Junior US Open have exited the competition. Emerging talent Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi put up a commendable fight against second seed Hannah Klugman of Britain, ultimately succumbing in the girls singles second round with scores of 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3, after battling for over two hours.

Maaya had a key opportunity to break Klugman when the British player was serving for the match, but Klugman managed to persist, continually targeting Maaya's backhand to secure her victory.

Later, Maaya and her partner Laima Cinalli were also eliminated from the doubles event, falling 2-6, 2-6 to the fourth-seeded pair Luna Vladson and Jeline Vandromme.

Additionally, Hitesh Chauhan and Krish Tyagi were also knocked out of their respective boys doubles second round matches, concluding their participation in the tournament.
