High-Profile Changes Expected at Upcoming BCCI AGM

The BCCI AGM this September will see major leadership appointments, including successors for the IPL chairman and BCCI president, pending implementation of sports governance reforms.

High-Profile Changes Expected at Upcoming BCCI AGM

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) - The upcoming BCCI Annual General Meeting, slated for the end of September, promises to be quite eventful as several high-profile positions, including those of president and IPL chairman, will be decided. The current IPL chairman, Arun Dhumal, is likely headed for a three-year mandatory cooling-off period after completing six years in office. Various names are being considered as his potential successor.

Devajit Saikia, who has spent three years cumulatively as joint secretary (two years and three months) and as secretary (nine months), will maintain his position. Joint secretary Rohan Gauns Desai and Prabhtej Bhatia, both in their first year as office bearers, will also continue.

Potential candidates for the IPL chairman's role include former Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Sanjay Naik and current BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, though no decision has been made.

Should Congressman Shukla resume as IPL chairman, Bihar Cricket Association president and BJP's Rakesh Tiwary may emerge as a candidate for BCCI vice-presidency.

The AGM is anticipated to occur in the last week of September. Only a few vacancies are expected as the election will adhere to the association's rules. The implementation of the National Sports Governance Act is still pending, and the BCCI will not wait indefinitely.

Roger Binny, having turned 70 in July, is now ineligible for re-election under the current constitution. The decision makers are leaning towards an India cricketer of stature to succeed Binny.

"Key stakeholders believe that a cricketer of distinction should always be appointed as president," a veteran BCCI official disclosed anonymously. "Sourav Ganguly was a renowned India captain, and Roger Binny was India's first World Cup-winning hero. However, the question remains—how many esteemed cricketers would be interested in taking on an honorary top role?"

The situation with Shukla is particularly intriguing. His vice-presidency began in 2020, leaving him with one year per the Lodha Constitution. However, if the National Sports Governance Act is enacted before the 2026 AGM, Rajya Sabha MP Shukla may bypass the mandatory cooling-off period.
