Australia's Women's Squad Announced for ICC World Cup 2023

Melbourne, Sep 5 (PTI) - Australia's cricket team is gearing up for the ICC Women's World Cup, with a 15-member squad announcement led by Alyssa Healy as they aim to defend their title as seven-time champions. Spinners will play a crucial role, especially with the tournament being set in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2. Sophie Molineux, a left-arm spinner returning from a knee injury, was a notable inclusion. Although she missed the ODI series against India from September 14 to 20, team physio Kate Beerworth expressed optimism about her availability for the World Cup. Darcie Brown and Georgia Wareham also returned, fully recovered from their injuries, enhancing Australia's squad depth.

As ten of the players come from the World Cup championship roster of 2022, Australia has a blend of experienced and fresh talent, showing through players like Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney. Healy, who was appointed captain following Meg Lanning's retirement in 2023, has shown strong leadership and form coming off a strong appearance in Australia A last month.

According to Shawn Flegler, the national selector, cricket in the subcontinent is a challenging assignment. However, he stated the team is ready and highlighted their experiences from recent subcontinent tours and the Women's Premier League as advantageous in preparing for the World Cup conditions. Australia's journey towards defending their title begins against New Zealand in Indore on October 1.

Australia Squad: Alyssa Healy (c), Darcie Brown, Ash Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham.
