Ravichandran Ashwin Clarifies Retirement Decision Amid Speculations

Ravichandran Ashwin clarified that his retirement was a personal decision. Despite advice from Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir to continue, he chose to retire, emphasizing transparency with senior players like Rohit and Kohli, who remain committed to future tournaments.

Ravichandran Ashwin Clarifies Retirement Decision Amid Speculations

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) - Ravichandran Ashwin, the former India off-spinner, recently addressed his unexpected decision to retire from cricket, emphasizing that it was purely a personal choice made without any external pressures. He clarified that no one compelled him to step down during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour in Australia. Ashwin, who is now 39, surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement after the third Test in Brisbane. Furthermore, he retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in August this year. "No one told me that you should go, no one told me that there is no place for you in the team. Actually, before I took the decision, 2-3 people advised against it, but I made my choice. In fact, they wanted me to play more," Ashwin explained on his YouTube channel. "Rohit Sharma, the then captain, advised me to reconsider, and Gauti bhai (Gautam Gambhir) did as well. However, I didn't discuss much about my retirement with Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors. Taking a decision to retire is deeply personal."

The off-spinner's explanation addresses rumors suggesting he was coerced into retiring by the team management. However, Ashwin has previously mentioned his reluctance to travel with the team if he wasn't part of the playing XI. In a broader discussion on team dynamics, Ashwin stressed the importance of transparent communication with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Even though both have retired from Test and T20 formats, they are set to play in the upcoming three ODIs against Australia. Rohit, who held the ODI captaincy, has been succeeded by Shubman Gill in this role. "Virat Kohli is undoubtedly an ODI legend. Considering how he and Rohit performed in the 2023 World Cup, they have nothing further to prove," Ashwin commented. "Hopefully, the necessary conversations with them occurred. Clear communication is vital."

He added that both Rohit and Kohli still have much to contribute to cricket. "I doubt any selector or coach could easily dismiss the contributions of Virat and Rohit. Their experience is invaluable. If there’s uncertainty about their participation until the 2027 World Cup, then the current strategic direction is justified." Ashwin continued, "There’s no question both Rohit and Virat aspire to be part of the 2027 World Cup. Observing their preparation shows their commitment to being physically ready for the event." -
