Michail Antonio Departs West Ham After Contract Ends

Michail Antonio leaves West Ham as a free agent after recovery from a severe car crash. Despite impressing for Jamaica and the Under-21s, his contract wasn't renewed. West Ham remains supportive and values his decade of service.

Michail Antonio Departs West Ham After Contract Ends

In London on August 7 (AP), Michail Antonio has entered free agency following West Ham's decision not to renew his contract. The forward's deal concluded at the end of last season, and he hasn’t played for West Ham in a competitive setting since his December car crash. However, he's made appearances for the Jamaican national team. West Ham United is grateful for Michail's exceptional and committed service in a claret and blue jersey over the past decade, the club stated.

Additionally, West Ham mentioned ongoing discussions with the 35-year-old Antonio about a potential future role in an "alternative capacity." Antonio sustained a lower limb fracture after his Ferrari collided with a tree near London on December 7, necessitating surgery.

The then-manager of West Ham, Julen Lopetegui, described the crash’s outcome as a "miracle." In a BBC interview in March, Antonio reflected on the “completely shattered” state of his leg and how close his brush with death had been. He shared that he broke his femur in four places, requiring a surgery involving a pole and four bolts in his thigh. He affirmed his determination to return to the field and achieved this by appearing as an 85th-minute substitute for Jamaica in their Gold Cup match against Guatemala in June.

Antonio made further substitute appearances against Guadeloupe and Panama and showcased his skills for West Ham's Under-21 development team by scoring twice against Boreham Wood, though this did not secure a contract renewal from West Ham, where he has played since 2015 after joining from Nottingham Forest.

West Ham emphasized, Michail will always hold a cherished and respected place within the West Ham United family. As since December, the club will persist in supporting his rehabilitation by providing access to training, facilities, and medical care as necessary. (AP) AM AM AM
