Xabi Alonso Praises Young Franco Mastantuono Amid Messi Admiration

Madrid, Aug 19 (AP) Real Madrid's head coach, Xabi Alonso, has lauded the composure and maturity of the young talent, Franco Mastantuono, while also minimizing the significance of the teenager's preference for Lionel Messi as the greatest player in the world.

The 18-year-old Mastantuono, who recently inked a six-year contract with Madrid, expressed during his introduction last week that he regards his fellow countryman, Messi, as the best in the world.

"It's logical for Messi to be his favorite player," Alonso stated on Monday. "He's from Argentina and he's left-footed, so it's no surprise to me."

Mastantuono's admiration for a player from Madrid's long-standing rival, Barcelona, caught many by surprise in Spain and garnered significant attention after his initial press conference. Some Real Madrid supporters were not pleased with the youngster's remarks.

Historically, Messi faced off against Cristiano Ronaldo, another player who is widely regarded as one of the world's best. While Messi now plays for Inter Miami in the United States, Ronaldo plies his trade with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Madrid had already secured the services of Mastantuono but waited until he turned 18 to complete the move. The club reportedly paid 45 million euros ($52.5 million) for the transfer from River Plate.

"The first time I spoke to Mastantuono, I was struck by his personality," noted the new Madrid coach. "At just 17, he exuded confidence. He wasn't fazed by the prospect of joining Real Madrid. His maturity and quality have been evident since his arrival. I am confident he'll adapt swiftly, both on the pitch and in the dressing room."

Alonso hinted that Mastantuono might feature in Madrid's upcoming La Liga opener against Osasuna.

"He'll bring us quality and energy, and he's highly committed," the coach added. "He's defensively driven, exudes that Argentine spirit – a true warrior with exceptional quality. His left foot is particularly impressive, both in set-pieces and delivering the final pass. His technique is remarkable, especially given his age. While we need to guide him, he is already performing at a commendable level."
