Abhishek Sharma smashes record-breaking 135 as India thrash England by 150 runs in T20I

Young batter Abhishek Sharma’s sensational knock leads India to a commanding victory over England, breaking multiple records in the process.

In a historic performance at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Sunday, February 2, Abhishek Sharma delivered one of the most dominant T20I innings by an Indian batter, scoring a blistering 135 off just 54 balls. His explosive innings helped Suryakumar Yadav-led India secure a 150-run win over England in the 5th T20I, sealing the series in emphatic fashion.

Abhishek Sharma Breaks Records

The 24-year-old from Amritsar, who made his T20I debut on July 6, 2024, surpassed Shubman Gill’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian in T20Is. His knock included seven fours and 13 sixes, setting another milestone for the most sixes hit by an Indian batter in a T20I match.

Pre-Match Preparation Key to Success

Reflecting on his stunning performance, Abhishek credited his rigorous pre-match training and the support from coaches and captain Suryakumar Yadav for backing him during tough phases.

“You can ask any player; such matches are very rare. It was all possible because of the efforts I put in during practice, the support from my captain and coaches, and my belief that when my day comes, I will play an innings like this,” Abhishek said in the post-match press conference.

Dominating England’s Bowling Attack

Abhishek revealed that he particularly enjoyed taking on England’s fast bowlers and leg-spinner Adil Rashid, against whom he hammered 13 sixes.

“I do not remember half of them now, to be honest. But using the pace of the bowlers over covers and taking on Adil Rashid felt good. I always try to recreate match scenarios in the nets so I can execute them in real matches,” he added.

No Rivalry, Just Team Spirit

Addressing questions about competition with fellow young openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek dismissed any notions of rivalry.

“I met Jaiswal and Shubman yesterday. We have been playing together since U-16, and there is no feeling of insecurity. Our only dream was to play for India, and all three of us doing so is the biggest achievement,” he stated.

India’s Dominant Victory

Abhishek’s record-breaking century propelled India to a mammoth total, leaving England struggling to chase down 247, as they crumbled under pressure. India’s 150-run victory is now one of the biggest margins in T20I history.

With this win, India continues to dominate the shortest format, and Abhishek Sharma has firmly announced himself as a force to be reckoned with in international cricket.
