Ladakh Marathon 2023: A High-Altitude Challenge

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) – The highly anticipated 12th edition of the Ladakh Marathon is set to take place from September 11 to 14, welcoming over 6,000 runners from 30 nations. This iconic event will feature six races, including two challenging Ultra-marathons and a variety of distances ranging from a 5km community run to the Full Marathon.

The Ladakh Marathon, acknowledged as the world's highest event certified by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races), offers a true test of endurance through its gruelling courses. The Khardung La Challenge, a 72km race, and the Silk Route Ultra, spanning 122km, stand as the marquee events of this sports spectacle.

Participants will traverse through the breathtaking landscapes of Leh and its surrounding areas, racing alongside the Indus River, navigating high-altitude passes like Khardung La and Nubra, all set against the backdrop of the magnificent Himalayas. The comprehensive lineup consists of the Full Marathon (42.195km), Half Marathon (21km), an 11.2km run, and the ‘Run Ladakh for Fun’ 5km event.

The arduous Silk Route Ultra kicks off on September 11. Competitors will embark on a 122km journey from Kyagar Village at 10,000 ft, tackle the formidable Khardung La at 17,618 ft, before descending into Leh Market. On September 12, nearly 300 athletes will tackle the Khardung La Challenge, navigating a 72km route starting from Khardung Village at 13,000 ft, crossing the pass, and finishing in Leh. Over 60km of this route remains above 13,000 ft, ensuring its place as the highest ultra-marathon worldwide and a testament to human capacity.

In preparation for these demanding races, all participants are required to arrive in Ladakh at least seven to ten days ahead of their race day for essential acclimatisation to the high-altitude environment. Chewang Motup Goba, the Chairperson of the High Altitude Sports Foundation and founder of the Ladakh Marathon, remarked, "The Khardung La Challenge and the Silk Route Ultra push the limits of human endurance and conditioning. This year’s record number of registrations reflects a newer, fitter India, one that embraces challenges with open arms."
