174 dead during rioting, stampede at football match in Indonesia

At least 174 people were killed and more than 200 sustained injuries after a stampede occurred following a riot that broke out in Indonesia's East Java Province.

The incident took place at a football match, where angry fans of Arema FC invaded the pitch at Kanjuruhan stadium as an ugly clash erupted after their team lost to Persebaya Surabaya 2-3 in Malang.

The Indonesian police fired tear gas that led to hundreds of them running to an exit gate in an effort to escape the police action. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, the police informed the local reporters.

East Java Police chief Nico Afinta said, 'In the incident, 129 people died, 2 of whom are police officers, 34 people died in the stadium and rest in the hospital'.

Over 300 were rushed to the hospital but many died on the way and during treatment. Several viral footages show videos of fans rushing towards the ground, fighting, and images of body bags.

Apologising for the brutal incident, the Indonesian Football Association said that an investigation team has been formed that has left for Malang.
