How to keep young children healthy amid Covid-19 outbreak

How to keep young children healthy amid Covid-19 outbreak

The brutal second wave of the novel coronavirus has been shown to have a much larger impact on young people than the first wave of infections last year. Many children too are falling ill this time around.

As of now, the severity of infection amongst children is found to be mild and only turns dangerous in the case of kids with underlying health conditions.

Nevertheless, it is important to pay special attention to children's safety and mental health amid the deadly outbreak. Here are some precautions you can take at home:

Reinforce Hygiene

This is a crucial time to inculcate hygiene habits. Include your child’s favourite song in their handwashing routine to ensure they wash their hands for at least 20 seconds. Teach kids to cover their face and mouth while sneezing or coughing using their arm or elbow.

Online Play Dates

With outdoor gatherings and physical attendance in schools all but shut, let your kids visit their friends from home. Plan play dates with friends and family members through video conferencing or phone calls.

Indoor Active Time

Regular physical activity can improve your child’s physical and mental health. If you can’t go to a park or open space, make sure kids get enough physical activity at home. Exercise together or play movement-oriented games.

Create A Routine

Covid-19 has disrupted work, home and school routines completely which can be hard for children. Creating a flexible but consistent daily routine can help. Make a schedule for you and your children that has time for structured activities as well as free time.

Model Good Behaviour

Children learn from their elders. Make sure you’re practising safe distancing and mask-wearing around your household to train children to follow safety precautions even without supervision.

This is not an easy time for anyone, so please remember to be kind to yourself as well!
