What is Toxic positivity? Can it lead to more unhappiness?

Are you the type of person who never complains, even when facing life's toughest challenges? If yes, then be careful; you might be falling into a dangerous trap!

You must have heard of mantras like 'Stay positive', 'cheer up' and 'self-love'. But, this positive focus can end up becoming overwhelming and lead to 'toxic positivity.'

According to psychologists, toxic positivity refers to the phenomenon of repressing all negative emotions and pretending to be happy always. But, this behaviour can worsen mental health problems.

The key ingredient in toxic positivity is far from just positivity. Rather, it is how a person's attitude to happiness leads them to respond positively even towards the negative experiences of their lives.

A survey suggested that 28% of people tend not to answer honestly when asked how they are doing. Experiencing pain, failure, loss or disappointment in life is unavoidable. What matters is how one responds to these experiences.

At a time when positive thinking plays a crucial role in one's life, openly displaying negative feelings seems to be less tolerated in society. It has also become difficult for people to express what they are feeling especially in the age of social media.

So, drop that FILTER and be the real you for YOU!
