Straighten up as bad posture may impact your brain function too

Poor posture has a dual impact, influencing not just body language and self-assurance, but also shaping external perceptions of you. This indirect influence extends to your mental well-being and the health of your brain.

Straighten up as bad posture may impact your brain function too

Experts emphasize that poor posture can lead to increased muscle tension and reduced blood flow to the brain, potentially impacting cognitive function.

Dr. K V Shivanand Reddy, a neurosurgeon at CARE Hospitals, further explains that bad posture not only affects body language and confidence but also influences how others perceive you, indirectly affecting your mental state and brain health.

Conversely, maintaining good posture can enhance oxygen flow and alleviate strain on the neck and back, which can have a positive effect on brain health.

Experts suggest that consistently practicing good posture through exercises and ergonomic habits may contribute to overall well-being, including brain health.

Here are eight daily practices to uphold good posture:

  • Ensure your computer screen is at eye level to prevent slouching.
  • Take regular breaks, especially if you have a desk job.
  • Stand, stretch, and move around to prevent stiffness.
Integrate neck, shoulder, and back stretches into your daily routine.
  • Engage in exercises that enhance core muscle strength, crucial for maintaining good posture.
  • Consider activities like yoga and pilates that emphasize balance, flexibility, and posture to improve alignment.
  • When lifting objects, bend at your hips and knees, not your back, and keep the object close to your body.
  • Choose footwear with adequate arch support to ensure proper alignment from the ground up.
