After Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, more and more cases of mumps are rising in Delhi-NCR.

What is mumps?

Mumps is a viral infection in which the salivary glands get affected. Due to this infection, the parotid glands present below the ears get swollen, due to which the cheeks and the jaw also get swollen. It's caused by the mumps virus, which belongs to the paramyxovirus family.

What are the symptoms of mumps?

The most common symptom of mumps is swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands. Some other symptoms of mumps are fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue and loss of appetite. In some extreme cases, mumps can lead to complications such as meningitis.

Is mumps contagious?

Mumps is contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or even talking of an infected person. It's highly contagious, especially in crowded environments like schools or public places. Hence, take care of cleanliness and wear a mask.

The reason why some people develop symptoms of mumps while others do not is not fully understood, but it likely depends on factors such as the individual's immune response and overall health.
