More young girls hitting early puberty post pandemic: Study

Pediatricians all across the world have reported increased cases of precocious puberty in young girls post pandemic. It is a condition when a child’s body changes due to puberty much before the usual biological age.

Research published in the Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism in Turkey also stated the same. The team included 124 girls for the study who had already been diagnosed with idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty. It turned out that 66 girls were diagnosed with the condition 3 years before the Covid-19 pandemic and 58 of them within just one year post the pandemic which is from April 2020–March 2021.

Experts say the reasons could be inactive lifestyle. Due to pandemic, we were all locked indoors including children. With schools shut for months and no physical activities, their metabolism could have been affected resulting in weight gain. Another reason for this condition could be increased screen time due to online classes.
