Now, scientists have discovered a simple dietary fix that might help aid the prevention of skin cancer. Researchers from the University of Ottawa in Canada studied the effect of blueberry juice on cancer stem cells, a type of cancer cell that can self-multiply and help tumours grow, in a lab study.

The team juiced fully matured wild blueberries picked from select regions in the Atlantic and then enriched a quantity of the juice with polyphenols. It was found that the bio-transformed juice significantly inhibited the reproduction of skin cancer stem cells and protected against DNA damage.

Published in the Journal of Cancer Prevention, the study added that the juice has potent anticancer and anti-metastatic potential and may represent an agent against skin cancer.
