According to a new study, researchers have found a link between women who consume pro-inflammatory foods and the increased risk of breast cancer.

As per a study presented at Nutrition 2021 Live Online, researchers have found a link between women who consume pro-inflammatory foods and the increased risk of breast cancer.

The results of the study are based on the data collected from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Around 3,18,686 women were observed for 14 years and out of this 13,246 cases of breast cancer were recorded. The dietary inflammatory potential was established by taking into consideration the inflammatory source of the diet (ISD).

The study found a 12 percent increase in the risk of breast cancer amongst women who incorporated foods that increase inflammation in the body as compared to the ones who don't. There was an even greater risk amongst premenopausal women.

Pro-inflammatory food items

Foods such as red and processed meat, butter, margarine and sweets containing sugar result in an increase in inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory food items

Food items such as fruits, vegetables and legumes contain anti-inflammatory properties.
