Heatwave Precautions: Tips to keep your elderly loved ones safe this summer

During scorching heat, it's crucial to take extra precautions to keep elderly individuals safe and comfortable. Firstly, ensure they stay hydrated by encouraging frequent water intake throughout the day, as older adults are more prone to dehydration.

Keep your loved one safe this summer

Advise them to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and limit outdoor activities to early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Make sure they wear breathable clothing and access to a shaded or air-conditioned environment can help prevent overheating and heat-related illnesses. Regularly check on elderly loved ones to ensure they are coping well with the heat and are taking necessary precautions to stay safe.

Foods to offer elder people during summer

Hydrating Fruits: Offer water-rich fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, oranges, and grapes to help prevent dehydration.

Light Salads: Prepare salads with fresh vegetables like cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, and bell peppers, topped with a light vinaigrette dressing for a refreshing and hydrating option.

Smoothies: Blend together fruits like bananas, berries, and mangoes with yogurt or milk for a nutritious and hydrating beverage that is easy to consume.

Frozen Treats: Offer homemade fruit popsicles made with pureed fruits or yogurt for a refreshing and hydrating dessert option.

Light Sandwiches: Prepare sandwiches with whole grain bread, lean protein like chicken or turkey, and plenty of fresh vegetables for a light and satisfying meal.
