Exclusive | World Asthma Day 2024: Pulmonologist Dr SZ Jafrey shares insights on triggers, prevention

World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May to raise awareness about Asthma worldwide. It is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), a World Health Organization collaborative organization.

In an exclusive interview with Editorji, Dr. SZ Jafrey, Pulmonologist & Critical Care Expert, spoke about the common triggers that cause this disease and what precautions can be taken to alleviate its effects.

What triggers Asthma?

According to him common triggers are pollen from plants, dust mites, animals and insect droppings. Even though they are microscopic and can’t be seen with the naked eye, their presence in the air can cause asthma. It is important to maintain hygiene in and around the house.

Can Ayurvedic herbs and spices manage asthma?

According to Dr. Jafrey, a lot of herbs have been claimed to cure asthma, but they are all false propaganda. Scientifically no herb has been proven to cure asthma. Only a good diet consisting of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants have proven helpful in alleviating the effects of asthma.

What to eat and what not to eat

Dr. Jafrey said that one can eat anything and should not avoid anything unless and until a person is allergic to something specific. Besides that, maintaining a healthy diet is a key.

Theme for World Asthma Day 2024

The theme for World Asthma Day 2024 is ‘Asthma Education Empowers’ which emphasises the importance of collaboration and solidarity in addressing the challenges faced by asthma patients worldwide. It highlights the need for collective action to ensure that everyone with asthma can breathe easily and live a full and active life.

Significance of World Asthma Day

This is an initiative organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care around the world. The primary goal of World Asthma Day is to increase awareness about asthma, its causes, symptoms, and available treatments. By educating individuals, communities, and healthcare professionals, the day aims to reduce the stigma associated with asthma and encourage early diagnosis and proper management.
