Drinking milk before bedtime is not as healthy as we think; explains doctor

Many people have a habit of drinking milk every night before going to bed. But experts suggest that this habit might cause indigestion; especially in people over 30 years of age.

California based gastroenterologist Dr. Palaniappan Manickam recently shared a post on Instagram explaining why drinking milk before bedtime is not as healthy as it’s thought to be.

People above 30 deficit lactase enzymes

According to Dr. Manickam, people above 30 lack lactase enzyme, due to which they are unable to tolerate it and suffer from indigestion.

Lactase enzymes help digest lactose in milk

Dr. Manickam also explained that an enzyme called lactase present in our small intestine breaks down the lactose present in milk into smaller particles like galactose and glucose which are easily absorbed. Small children have high quantity of lactase enzymes in their body which helps them in digesting milk easily. After the age of 5 lactase production decreases in humans and by the age of 30 its production is almost nil.
