Are cold showers in winters beneficial for health? Expert weighs in

Cold showers in winter can have both potential benefits and drawbacks, and the effects may vary from person to person.

Exposure to cold water can increase alertness and wakefulness, making it a natural energizer. Some studies suggest that cold exposure might stimulate the immune system, potentially helping to build resilience.

However, according to experts cold shower in winters causes blood vessels to contract, raising blood pressure which increases risk of heart attack or stroke.

According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, Cardiologist said that sudden immersion in cold water can cause myocardial infarction. The rate of occurrence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) varies by season and is greatest during winter and least in summer. And, AF is a common risk factor for stroke, especially in older people and people with high blood pressure.

He had shared a post on X (then Twitter) saying that he had once come across a 68 year old patient who had a right sided weakness and inability to talk for 26 hours follwoing a cold water bath.

So, doctors suggests that if you're considering cold showers, start with lukewarm water and gradually decrease the temperature to allow your body to adapt.

Other adverse effects of cold showers during winters:

Risk of Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to cold water, especially in winter, can lead to a drop in body temperature and increase the risk of hypothermia.

Vasoconstriction: Cold water can cause blood vessels to constrict, potentially leading to increased blood pressure. This could be problematic for individuals with cardiovascular issues.

Discomfort: Cold showers can be uncomfortable, and for some individuals, they may not be suitable due to existing health conditions or personal preferences.

Respiratory Stress: Exposure to cold water may cause rapid breathing and increased stress on the respiratory system, which might be challenging for individuals with respiratory conditions.
