Amid red alert Ministry of Health, Govt. of India issues guidelines to protect yourself from heatwaves

Due to extreme heatwaves and soaring temperatures red alert has been issued until 25th May in several parts of the country. Amid this Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India has issued guidelines to stay safe. The Minstry has shared posts on social media platform X.

Ministry of Health, Govt. of India issues guidelines

The Ministry has urged people to drink sufficient water and use ORS or homemade drinks such as lassi, lemon water, and buttermilk. The Ministry also advises eating fruits and vegetables, wearing light-coloured clothes and staying indoors as much as possible. It is also advised to avoid cooking during the peak hours of the day and to limit the use of sugar.

Healthy foods to opt for during summers

Fruits: Watermelon, strawberries, oranges, cucumbers, and pineapple are high in water content and help to keep you hydrated.

Vegetables: Cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, and leafy greens like spinach and lettuce are refreshing and provide essential nutrients.

Salads: Opt for salads with a variety of colourful vegetables, leafy greens, and lean protein like grilled chicken or tofu.

Hydrating Beverages: Besides water, opt for coconut water, herbal teas, or infused water with cucumber, mint, or lemon for added flavour and hydration.

How to protect yourselves from heatwaves

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid sugary and caffeinated beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.

Keep Cool: Stay in air-conditioned or well-ventilated areas as much as possible. Use fans and take cool showers or baths to lower body temperature.

Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton.

Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outdoors, seek shade and take frequent breaks.
