5 respiratory illnesses to look out for during weather change, know what precautions to take

The transition from winter to summer brings about significant shifts in weather patterns, which can impact health in various ways. The emergence of pollen and other allergens during springtime can exacerbate allergic reactions, leading to symptoms like sneezing, itching, and congestion.

During weather changes, several respiratory illnesses may become more prevalent due to factors like temperature fluctuations, humidity levels, and airborne allergens. Here are five respiratory illnesses to look out for.

5 repiratory illnesses to look out for during weather change

Common Cold: Weather changes, particularly during the transition from warm to cold or vice versa, can lead to an increase in common cold cases. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, congestion, and sore throat.

Influenza (Flu): Flu viruses tend to thrive during seasonal changes, particularly in colder months. Symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, cough, and sore throat. Severe cases can lead to complications such as pneumonia.

Asthma: Weather changes, especially cold air, can trigger asthma symptoms in susceptible individuals. Asthma exacerbations may occur due to changes in temperature, humidity, and air pollution levels. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness.

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Weather changes can also trigger allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, particularly during seasons with high pollen counts. Symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, throat irritation, and fatigue.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Exacerbation: COPD patients may experience worsening symptoms during weather changes, especially when transitioning from warm to cold weather. Cold air can irritate the airways and trigger exacerbations characterized by increased coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and mucus production.

How to take precaution from seasonal illnesses

It's essential to monitor symptoms closely during weather transitions and take preventive measures such as staying hydrated, maintaining indoor air quality, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. Additionally, individuals with chronic respiratory conditions should follow their healthcare provider's recommendations and have a management plan in place to address exacerbations promptly.
