30% people infected with coronavirus develop long Covid, study reveals

According to a recent study published in the General Internal Medicine journal, about 30% of COVID-19 patients develop the condition known as long COVID.

For the study, UCLA researchers examined 1,038 Covid-19 patients between April 2020 and February 2021. While some had to be hospitalised, others were treated as outpatients.

As per the findings, 309 individuals developed long Covid and reported symptoms 60-90 days post-infection. While fatigue and shortness of breath were the most reported symptoms in hospitalised patients, outpatients reported the loss of smell the most.

Individuals with a history of hospitalisation, diabetes and a higher body mass index (BMI) are more likely to develop the condition, study authors concluded.
