      Guru Nanak Jayanti is commemorated as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten gurus holy to Sikhism. Also known as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav or Gurupurab, this year it will be observed on 19 November.

      Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most sacred festivals for Sikhs all over the world and is celebrated with utmost love and reverence. On this day, Sikhs swear an oath to follow the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev which involve overcoming five emotions namely, lust, anger, greed, attachment and pride.

      At the end of the day, a Langar is organised in various Gurudwara premises in which Sikhs provide food to the needy irrespective of caste, creed and culture and uphold their tradition of selfless service.
