Why Red wine gives you a headache and how to treat it? Expert has insights

Most of us love sipping red wine to unwind on weekdays, weekends or any special day. Red wine is subtle and tastes best when chilled. However, do you know that your favourite red wine may be causing headaches?

Why does red wine cause headache?

While there is a debate, research shows that histamine and tyramine, both are naturally found in wine and can be the leading cause of wine-induced headaches. While histamine dilates blood vessels, tyramine constricts and then dilates them.

Some people lack the enzyme that helps metabolise histamine and hence are more prone to getting headaches after sipping on wine. Red wine is packed with more histamine than white wine because it is made from the whole grape, including the skin. Another reason for headaches from red wine is the presence of tannins - a plant chemical that gives red wines their flavour.

How to prevent headaches from wine

To prevent headaches while sipping wine, make sure to keep a glass of water. Other than that you can consider taking an anti-histamine before consuming wine. You can also reduce the chances of getting a headache by drinking wine sparingly and by drinking two strong cups of coffee before your wine-drinking session.
