Unraveling the origins of Hyderabad's beloved Osmania biscuits, know all about it

Osmania biscuits are a beloved treat originating from Hyderabad, a city renowned for its rich culinary heritage. While the exact origins of the biscuits are not clear, there are two prominent narratives. Chef Ranveer Brar shared a video explaining the theories behind this biscuit.

One theory suggests that doctors at Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad recommended a light snack for their patients. A local bakery in Hyderabad created a healthy and nutritious biscuit for patients in the hospital, which was very light on the stomach and could be eaten guilt-free.

Another theory suggests that the biscuit was specially made for Nawab Mir Osman Ali, delivered daily to his royal palace and distributed among his family and friends. In the video, Chef Brar also mentioned that the biscuit has its own charm and a dedicated fan following. These biscuits are made from milk, flour, cardamom, salt, and sugar which is a healthy choice to add in your diet.

Recipe to make Osmania biscuits

To make Osmania biscuits, start by creaming together 1 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder to the creamed mixture.

Mix well until a soft dough forms, adding 2-3 tablespoons of milk as needed to bring the dough together. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into round or oval shapes using a cookie cutter.

Place the biscuits on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Let the Osmania biscuits cool on a wire rack before serving with tea or storing in an airtight container. Enjoy the delightful taste of Hyderabad's iconic biscuits!
