How Is A Burn-Away Cake Made?

The process of creating a burn-away cake may seem magical, but it's actually achieved through food technology. The design on top is made using edible ink and sugar paper.

The burnt layer is crafted from rice paper or wafer paper, adorned with a selected design and delicately positioned atop the cake. Pictures are printed on both sheets using edible ink. The uppermost wafer sheet, made of potato starch and oil, is thinner and ignites easily. In contrast, the bottom sheet, composed of sugar, has a denser texture and reacts differently to heat.
