R Madhavan reveals how chewing food helps in weight loss: How many times should one chew?

R Madhavan recently took to X and revealed how he lost oodles of weight in 21 days. He revealed that intermittent fasting, long morning walks, early dinner and chewing his food multiple times helped him lose weight.

This makes us wonder, how chewing affects weight loss and how many times should we ideally chew to help burn calories. Let us know more.

Benefits of chewing food for longer

Improves digestion

Chewing breaks down food into smaller particles, making it easier for your digestive system to process and absorb nutrients.

Helps in better food absorption

Thoroughly chewed food is more accessible to digestive enzymes, leading to better nutrient extraction and absorption.

Helps in weight management

Chewing slowly can help control portion sizes and prevent overeating. It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to register fullness, so eating more slowly can help you eat less.

Reduces risk of overeating

Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly can help you become more aware of your hunger and fullness cues, reducing the likelihood of overeating.

How many times should you chew your food?

In conversation with ETimes, Vanshika Bhardwaj, Senior Dietician, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram revealed that one should chew their food at least 40 times before swallowing. Chewing food 40-50 times also controls hunger and one tends to consume less food.

Several studies have found that increasing the number of chews can improve levels of gut hormones related to hunger and satiety, leading to better appetite control. This method encourages mindful eating, making you more aware of your food intake and helping you recognize when you are full, thereby preventing overeating.
