Peanuts: tiny powerhouse of proteins with a range of health benefits

Peanuts, as the name suggests aren’t actually nuts. They are legumes that originated from South Africa. Peanuts have a strong nutritional profile. They are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fiber, and many key vitamins and minerals. Peanuts come in many forms, including roasted, salted, chocolate-coated, and peanut butter. Let’s take a look at some health benefits of peanuts as suggested by the National Institutes of Health in USA.

Good for your heart

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Observational studies indicate that eating peanuts, as well as other types of nuts, may protect against heart disease.

Prevents gallstone

Two studies suggest that frequent peanut consumption may cut the risk of gallstones in both men and women. As most gallstones are largely composed of cholesterol, the healthy mono-unsaturated fat in peanuts in fact help lower cholesterol levels, thereby preventing gallstone.

Helps in weight loss

Foods with a lot of protein can help you feel full with fewer calories. And in a trail mix, peanuts are second only to almonds when it comes to protein count. Studies have shown that people who include a moderate amount of peanuts in their diet will not gain weight from peanuts. In fact, peanuts could help them lose weight.
