Late Night Snacking: Know the pros and cons of late-night munching on health and sleep

Youngsters nowadays are known for munching unhealthy snacks throughout the day, especially late at night while binge watching their favourite movies and shows. Even though it is a common practice, we know that it has adverse effects on our health and our sleep cycle.

People with irregular work schedules are the ones most habituated of late-night snacking. Consuming high-carb, unhealthy fat snacks at night can disrupt circadian rhythms and sleep cycles.

Research from Brigham and Women's Hospital reveals that late-night eating increases obesity risk by heightening hunger, reducing calorie burn, and altering fat tissue. Late-night munching may also lead to sleep-disrupting gastrointestinal issues, as noted in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Yet, late-night snacking can offer benefits by providing missed nutrients during the day, if you opt for nourishing options like Greek yogurt with berries, whole-grain crackers with hummus, or nuts which can supply essential vitamins and minerals.
