India's Ras Malai ranked second best cheese dessert in the world | Deets inside

Don't we all love Indian desserts? Be it the rosogollas from West Bengal or the nationwide favourite rice kheer. However, if there is one dessert from India that we all love and can never have enough has to be ras malai. Made with cottage cheese and milk, this dessert has many variations and Indians all over the world love it.

And now looks like finally, ras malai has received the recognition it deserves. According to a recent report, ras malai has been recognised as the second-best cheese dessert in the world.

Ras malai recognised as second-best cheese dessert

Cheese desserts are soft and have a melt-in-mouth texture. Popular food guide Taste Atlas has listed 10 best cheese-based desserts and India's ras malai is in the top 2. The first position was bagged by Sernik from Poland, followed by Ras malai.

While Sernik from Poland is made with eggs, sugar and twarog, Rasmalai is made using milk and means 'juice and 'cream'. Ras malai originated in West Bengal but has gained prominence across India and now across the world.

Some other cheese desserts featuring on the list are Japanese cheesecake, Spain's Basque cheesecake.

The origin of rasmalai

This sweet originated in the Samatata region of Bengal where they used to be ceremonial sweets during Janmashtami celebration. However, it was only during the mid-20th century, Ras Malai became a regionally popular sweets across South Asia apart from Bengal.
