Blowing candles on a cake: This is why you should never do it according to a food safety expert

Cake is the most important part of every celebration. Most of us blow out the candles on the cake to celebrate occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and farewells.

However, according to the study by Paul Dawson, professor of food safety at Clemson University in the US found that 'about 1,000' bacteria are released in a single blow of candles.

The author mentioned that not everyone needs to worry about getting infected by the cake after consuming it. The genuine concern is with elderly sick people or those who already have diseases.

The study further concluded that blowing out the candles over the icing surface resulted in 1400% more bacteria compared to icing not blown on.

Blowing could lead to the transfer of bacteria and other micro-organisms from the respiratory tract of a person blowing out candles to food consumed by others.
