Banned Chinese garlic takes over the market: Here is how to differentiate, what to keep in mind

After fake garlic now banned Chinese garlic has hit Indian markets. If you are buying garlic from the market, be careful! Despite being banned in 2014, Chinese garlic has seeped into your nearby vegetable markets. According to reports, traders in Gujarat’s Rajkot recently staged a day-long protest after several bags of Chinese garlic were found at Gondal Agriculture Produce Market Cooperative (APMC).

What is Chinese garlic and why is it banned? How to differentiate between real and Chinese garlic? Let's find out!

What is Chinese garlic?

Allium sativum aka Garlic is known as a 'magical spice'. It forms an important part of Indian meals. When choosing garlic, make sure to check it thoroughly before buying from the market.

Chinese garlic is often produced using modern farming methods that involve the extensive use of chemicals and pesticides, raising concerns about its safety for consumption. The presence of synthetic substances in some cases can pose potential health risks.

For overall well-being, it's important to be cautious of such products and consider alternatives that are grown using safer, more natural methods.

How to differentiate?

Chinese garlic is typically smaller in size, with a light white and pink hue. It has a milder aroma compared to Indian garlic, which is known for its stronger, more pungent smell.
