World Bamboo Day 2023: From huts to clothing; know how bamboo has evolved over the years

Every year on September 18th, people around the world celebrate World Bamboo Day. It's a special day to help more people understand how valuable and useful bamboo can be.

You may have seen pandas displaying affection for bamboo in various videos and pictures. Interestingly, not only pandas but also numerous industries are increasingly embracing and endorsing products crafted from bamboo. Among these industries, the fashion and apparel sector stands out as a prominent example.

The recent surge in demand for bamboo products is not solely driven by sustainability concerns. Bamboo has been a versatile resource for centuries, particularly in Asia, where it has been employed in constructing huts and crafting furniture.
Back then, the notion of wearing bamboo-based clothing seemed inconceivable, until the advent of new technologies made it a reality.

By 2029, the bamboo market is expected to reach US $94.38 billion, thanks to growth in the industrial product segment.

There are several reasons behind this

  • It creates economic value for customers and manufacturers.
  • It is not costly but rather highly cost-effective
  • Its texture is excellent
  • Bamboo is widely available

How cloth is made from bamboo

Creating fabric from bamboo involves using a particular type of highly flexible bamboo. The process begins with extracting cellulose from bamboo pulp, transforming it into fibres, and subsequently crafting fabric from these fibres, followed by dyeing it in the desired colours.

If you haven't experienced bamboo clothing yet, here are five reasons you should consider giving it a try

  • Clothing crafted from this material offers exceptional comfort, providing a silky-soft texture and luxurious comfort.
  • Bamboo is one of the best environment-friendly things, even more than cotton, it is biodegradable and the best thing is that it produces its own natural chemical called 'Bamboo Kun' to protect itself from insects.
  • If you sweat a lot then this fabric is for you. Bamboo fabric absorbs and wicks away moisture 40 per cent more than cotton. The micro gaps present in it make the fabric airy.
  • Clothes made from bamboo do not shrink or fade quickly after washing, clothes made from bamboo look the same for years because its colour does not fade, making it always look new.
