Why should you wash new clothes before wearing them? Expert explains

The excitement of buying new clothes and wearing them immediately is a next level experience. With festivities and wedding season hovering upon us, alot of you must be on a shopping spree. But how many of you wash new clothes before wearing them? If you do not, then you must adapt the practice. Here's the reason behind it.

Human body naturally produces body soils throughout the day

Ohio-based Tide scientist with Procter & Gamble, Kim Romine says that human body naturally produces body soils throughout the day. So, it is possible that when you buy a new piece of cloth at a store, it may have about one liter of sweat, 40 grams of sebum (oils secreted from the body), 10 grams of dead skin cells and 10 grams of salt on it from someone else's body who had tried it before you.

Washing helps remove germs or bacteria picked up during handling and storage

Besides this, washing new clothes before wearing them is recommended to remove any residual chemicals, dyes, or finishing agents that might be present from the manufacturing and shipping processes. This practice helps eliminate potential irritants, allergens, or substances that could cause skin reactions and ensures the clothes are clean and safe for direct contact with the skin. Additionally, washing helps remove any germs or bacteria that may have been picked up during handling and storage.
