Summers make our lives bothersome due to rising temperature, sweat and humidity. Besides these reasons, there’s another reason summer is hated for. And that’s hairfall! According to experts, men tend to lose more hair during this season. The British Journal of Dermatology published an analysis based on data between January 2004 and October 2016 which indicated that hair loss is more prevalent during summer and autumn.

Factors that cause hair fall in men during summer

Some factors associated with summer which potentially contribute to hair loss are:

Sun exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage hair follicles, leading to weaker hair and potential shedding.

Heat: Higher temperatures can lead to increased sweating, which can sometimes irritate the scalp. Additionally, excessive heat styling or use of hot tools can damage hair strands over time.

Stress: While summer is often associated with relaxation and vacations, it can also be a stressful time for some individuals due to various reasons such as travel, family gatherings, or work deadlines. Stress is a known factor that can contribute to hair loss.

Seasonal shedding: Some people experience seasonal shedding, where they notice increased hair loss during certain times of the year. However, this shedding pattern can vary from person to person and isn't necessarily tied to the seasons for everyone.

How men can prevent hairfall during summers

Protect your scalp from the sun: Wear a hat or use sunscreen specifically formulated for the scalp to shield it from harmful UV rays.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and scalp hydrated, which helps maintain healthy hair follicles.

Use gentle hair care products: Opt for mild shampoos and conditioners that are suitable for your hair type and scalp condition. Avoid harsh hair gels and wax that strip away natural oils and weaken hair.

Avoid excessive heat styling: Limit the use of hot styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons, as excessive heat can damage hair strands and lead to breakage.

Keep your scalp clean: Wash your hair regularly to remove sweat, dirt, and excess oil that can clog hair follicles and contribute to hair fall.

Follow a balanced diet: Eat a nutritious diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein to support hair growth and strength. Include foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your meals.

Manage stress: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to minimize the impact of stress on your hair health.

Avoid tight hairstyles: Refrain from pulling your hair back tightly into ponytails as this can put stress on the hair follicles and lead to traction alopecia.

Consult a dermatologist: If you're experiencing persistent or excessive hair fall, consult a dermatologist to determine the underlying cause and receive personalized treatment recommendations.
