Women Reservation Bill latest update: Rahul hails, but invokes President Murmu & adds census caveat

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed the government’s decision to introduce the Women Reservation Bill in Parliament but pointed out that the moment should have seen President Droupadi Murmu's presence.

“The fact that President Murmu is a woman and represents the tribal community would have been “befitting,” Rahul said while speaking in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament.

The Congress MP, from Wayanad in Kerala, also pushed for a caste census, criticising the central government for the delay. He said the ‘BJP tends to create a distraction whenever the issue is brought up’.

“This is a nice, tasteful building but would have liked to see President in this process,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi also hailed the Women’s Reservation Bill as “another big step,” saying that it is a sequel to Rajiv Gandhi’s initiative of reserving seats for women in local polls.
