Uttar Pradesh targets sugar sector boost to fuel trillion-dollar economy goal

Uttar Pradesh’s sugar industry is set to play a key role in fulfilling Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of transforming the state into a one-trillion-dollar economy.

The state government has set an ambitious target to boost the Gross Value Output (GVO) of the sugar sector from Rs 1.32 lakh crore to over Rs 1.62 lakh crore within the next three years. This growth is in line with the state's ongoing efforts to revitalize its agricultural and industrial sectors.

According to officials from the sugar industry and sugarcane development department, the GVO has seen steady growth over recent years, climbing from Rs 1,24,198 crore in FY 2023–24 to Rs 1,32,024 crore in FY 2024–25. As part of its strategic plan, the department aims to increase sugarcane production by 7% and jaggery production by 10% by the year 2027–28.

To achieve these goals, a comprehensive action plan has been outlined for the current financial year. Key initiatives include improving the sugar recovery rate from 9.56% to 10.50%, ensuring the timely sale of 91.54 lakh quintals, and expanding the sector’s storage capacity. These measures are designed to enhance productivity and ensure that Uttar Pradesh remains a leader in the sugar industry.

The Yogi government has also focused on improving the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers in the state. Over the years, the government has reached out to 65 lakh registered farmers, with 46.5 lakh receiving direct benefits.

In a recent move, the government disbursed Rs 2.80 lakh crore in sugarcane dues, a step expected to significantly improve the financial stability of these farmers and bolster the overall agricultural economy.
