Uttar Pradesh Chief Yogi Adityanath on Monday blamed Jawaharlal Nehru for the extremism and separatism "emanating from Kashmir", and alleged that the first prime minister of India made the issue so "controversial" that it continues to sting the country even now.
Addressing an event on the 75th death anniversary of the country's first home minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he referred to the integration of over 560 princely states into the Union of India and pointed to Junagadh and Hyderabad, which were prickly thorns in the process.
"All the Hindu princely states of India agreed to become a part of the Republic of India, but the Nawab of Junagadh and the Nizam of Hyderabad refused. Both had to be integrated into India. Through a bloodless revolution, solely due to Sardar Patel's wisdom, these two princely states became a part of India," Adityanath said.
He went on to say that there was uncertainty about the fate of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.
"So, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru took the matter into his own hands. He made Jammu and Kashmir so controversial that it continued to sting India even after Independence. The country got extremism ('ugravaad') and separatism ('algaavaad') from Kashmir because of Pandit Nehru," the Uttar Pradesh chief minister claimed.
He added that the country is grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, by fulfilling the dreams of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, has abolished Article 370 in Kashmir, making it an integral part of India, while taking forward the resolve of one country, one constitution, and one flag.
"There were 567 princely states at the time of Independence, and they were integrated into the Republic of India. The country will always remember Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as its architect. This is his creation," the chief minister said.
He pointed out that the Nawab of Junagadh and Hyderabad's Nizam did not want to join India, as the British gave the princely states the freedom to choose whether they wanted to join India or Pakistan, or maintain their independent existence.
Eulogising Sardar Patel, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the first home minister of India initiated numerous programmes in the country.
"Be it the restoration of the Somnath temple, the development of a mechanism to resolve various disputes within India, or giving the Indian Administrative Service its present form, all of this was made possible because of this great leader, Vallabhbhai Patel."
"It was the country's misfortune that just when India needed the glorious leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a longer period, he passed away on December 15, 1950," Adityanath said.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also spoke on this occasion.
Earlier, in a post on X, Adityanath paid tributes to Patel, saying, "On the death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the architect of India's unity and integrity from north to south and east to west, and the 'Iron Man' and 'Bharat Ratna, ' we pay him our humble tributes!
"His tireless contributions to the country's internal security, self-reliance, and the empowerment of farmers, and his vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat, Surakshit Bharat' (One India, Great India, Secure India), are an inspiration to us all," he said.
Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Pathak also paid their tributes to Sardar Patel.
In a post in Hindi on X, Maurya said, "Our humble tributes to the architect of India's unity and integrity, the first home minister and deputy prime minister of Independent India, 'Bharat Ratna', the 'Iron Man' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his death anniversary!"
"'Iron Man' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel successfully integrated the princely states, providing a strong foundation for the nation's unity and security. By connecting farmers, backward classes, and marginalised sections of society through cooperatives, he propelled the country towards self-employment and self-reliance. His life, imbued with duty, courage, and service to the nation, remains a constant source of inspiration for all of us," Maurya said on X.
Pathak took to X to say, "Humble tributes to the architect of modern India, the symbol of national unity and integrity, the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of independent India, Bharat Ratna, the Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his death anniversary."
Born in Nadiad, Gujarat, in 1875, Patel was a pivotal figure in India's struggle for Independence. As the country's first home minister, he was instrumental in integrating over 560 princely states into the Indian Union post-Independence. He died in 1950.

Uttar Pradesh Police and the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) have identified more than 10 key suspects allegedly involved in the organised nexus behind the illegal trade of codeine-based cough syrups, as the state's biggest crackdown on the menace gathers pace, officials said Thursday.
The identification of the suspects emerged during an extensive investigation by the FSDA and police into the diversion, storage and trafficking of codeine-based cough syrups, which is being probed by a special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the state government earlier this week.
"The probe has so far led to the identification of over a dozen persons believed to be part of the core conspiracy operating across multiple districts and states. Evidence suggests a well-coordinated network involving manufacturers, distributors, transporters and local operators," a senior official said, requesting anonymity.
According to the official, FIRs have been registered against more than 128 establishments and their operators so far, marking what the government describes as its largest-ever action against illegal pharmaceutical trafficking in the state.
Raids are continuing at multiple locations to apprehend those identified, while investigators are also examining financial transactions, inter-state linkages and possible diversion of legally manufactured cough syrup into the illegal market, the official said.
The action was initiated after the state government took suo motu cognisance of incidents related to misuse of codeine-based cough syrups reported in other states, following which enforcement was stepped up across Uttar Pradesh, he added.
The SIT, headed by Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) L R Kumar and comprising senior police and FSDA officials, is probing the organised nature of the racket and its wider ramifications.
"The chief minister has taken a very firm view of the matter and has directed that no person involved, irrespective of position or influence, should be spared," the official said.
Further arrests and disclosures are expected as searches and seizures continue, he added.

After a night's halt on the temple premises, Adityanath directed the concerned officials present at the venue to deal with each person&rsquo;s issue sensitively and ensure timely disposal of all cases, the statement said.
A large number of women attended the programme.
The chief minister asked the officials to take strict legal action in land-grabbing cases. When a woman complained that her house had been set on fire, Adityanath ordered immediate action against the accused, the statement said.
Several people also sought financial assistance for the treatment of serious ailments. Assuring full support, the chief minister said lack of funds would not hinder medical care, and instructed the officials to expedite hospital estimates and send them to the government so that adequate help could be provided from the chief minister&rsquo;s relief fund, the statement said.

According to a statement, Adityanath was speaking at a function to felicitate winners of the 69th National School Games 2025 (Greco-Roman) wrestling competition at Veer Bahadur Singh Sports College. He honoured medalists in the under-17 and under-19 categories.
Addressing the participants, he said, "Sports play a vital role in the all-round development of an individual, and the way Indian sportspersons are enhancing the nation's prestige on the global stage is a matter of great pride.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Keeping this in mind, he said, the state government has taken significant steps to strengthen sports infrastructure at every level. He also urged the athletes to aim for a strong performance at the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted in India.
The chief minister reiterated that sports are a powerful medium for holistic growth and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s vision of an Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat is closely linked to the health and strength of the youth. This will be possible only when sports are given equal importance as academics in institutions, he said.
He said the government has decided to build a stadium in every district and a mini-stadium in every block. Mini-stadiums are being constructed in government colleges in 18 districts, each with an allocation of nearly Rs 5 crore, he added.
Similar facilities are coming up in government colleges in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj. To boost sports in educational institutions, the government is providing Rs 25,000 to each college, Rs 5,000 to schools under basic and secondary education, and Rs 10,000 to junior high schools.
He said a sports university is being established in Meerut and will be named after hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.Encouraging the wrestlers, Adityanath said those competing in the under-17 and under-19 categories should target medals at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
He advised runners-up and those who missed medals to learn from their shortcomings and continue working hard, noting that the first competition is always with oneself.

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a major crackdown on alleged Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators across the state, and orders were issued to establish detention centres in every division of the state, a senior official said here on Wednesday.&nbsp;
According to the official, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued directions to 17 urban local bodies to prepare detailed lists of illegal immigrants under their jurisdictions. These lists are to be submitted to the respective Commissioners and Inspectors General for further scrutiny.&nbsp;
In the first phase of the action plan, Commissioners and IGs have been instructed to set up dedicated detention centres to hold individuals identified during the verification process.&nbsp;
The chief minister has also directed that detention centres be established in every division of the state, the official said. "Following the chief minister's instructions, the administrative machinery has swung into action. Verification, documentation and field assessments have begun in several districts," the official said.&nbsp;
On November 22, Adityanath had issued clear instructions to all district magistrates of the state to take prompt and strict action against illegal immigrants and had directed that temporary detention centres be established in each district to house infiltrators.&nbsp;
The chief minister had said that law and order, national security, and social harmony are top priorities, and that any form of illegal activity will not be tolerated.&nbsp;
According to the officials, illegal immigrants with foreign citizenship will be housed in these centres and will be ensured there until the necessary verification process is completed.&nbsp;
Adityanath had said that illegal immigrants held in detention centres will be deported to their countries of origin as per the established procedures.&nbsp;
Uttar Pradesh shares an open border with Nepal, allowing free movement of citizens of both countries, but checks on residents of other nationalities.&nbsp;

Emphasising that a large number of devotees from Uttar Pradesh visit Rameshwaram, Madurai, and Kanyakumari every year, the chief minister announced that the tourism department will organise special travel programmes that will provide pilgrims with access to these holy sites at discounted rates.
Noting that the programme is akin to investing in India's future, Adityanath said that under the prime minister's guidance, the Kashi Tamil Sangamam has become a symbol of India's cultural renaissance.
He said that Lord Shiva is at the centre of the ancient relationship between Kashi and the Tamil tradition, and this connection was furthered by Adi Shankaracharya by establishing holy Peethas in all four corners of India.
The chief minister said that this visit to Uttar Pradesh will provide the unique spiritual privilege of experiencing the divine darshan of Lord Ram after witnessing the Shiva devotion of Kashi, the Sangam (confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) in Prayagraj, and the hoisting of the Dharmadhwaja in Ayodhya.
"This event is strengthening the cultural, educational, economic, and spiritual partnership between North and South India, opening new doors to India's bright future," he said.
Adityanath also described the car rally, which began from Tenkasi (Tamil Nadu) this year, as a major attraction of the event. He said that this 2,000-kilometre journey reminds one of the deep connection with Kashi. Referring to Adiveera Parakrama Pandian, the great ruler of the Pandya dynasty, he said that this journey is a remembrance of his ancient route towards the north.
Referring to the Aditya Hridaya Stotra composed by Maharishi Agastya, Adityanath said that this is the same hymn which Maharishi Agastya recited to Lord Ram before the battle with Ravan.
He said that great personalities like Maharishi Agastya, Adi Guru Shankaracharya, Saint Thiruvalluvar, Jagadguru Ramanujacharya, and Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan originated from South India and spread the light of knowledge throughout the country. Shaiva and Vaishnava devotional traditions demonstrate the spiritual richness of Tamil civilisation.
He explained that the Chettiar community has been providing worship materials for the Kashi Vishwanath Temple for the past 200 years. The tradition of anointing Sri Ramanathaswamy of Rameshwaram with water from the Triveni Sangam and Kashi Vishwanath with water from Koditheertham is now continuing every month.
Referring to Kashi's Kedar Ghat, Hanuman Ghat, and Harishchandra Ghat, he said that Tamil culture is still vibrant here.
He described the joint educational projects of IIT Madras and BHU as an inspiring step towards national unity.
Mentioning that visitors will also visit Prayagraj and Ayodhya during their stay, Adityanath said that a temple dedicated to Maharishi Agastya has been built in the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya, and his statue has been installed.
The entrance to the Ram temple is named after Jagadguru Shankaracharya and Jagadguru Ramanujacharya, and statues of South Indian saints Tyagaraja, Purandara Dasa, and Arunachala Kavi are also installed in Ayodhya's Brihaspati Kund, Adityanath said.
He also said that the construction of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham under the leadership of the prime minister has reinvigorated the country's cultural and spiritual energies.
Over 26 crore devotees have visited the temple in the last four years, with the largest number coming from Tamil Nadu, he said.

State Energy Minister A K Sharma inaugurated the scheme from Soraon sub-station in Prayagraj. He also inaugurated mega camps at Kunda sub-station in Pratapgarh and Unchahar sub-station in Raebareli district, according to an official statement.
Speaking after inaugurating the scheme, Sharma said it will provide financial relief to consumers and build their trust in the electricity department.
The minister, who distributed certificates to the first five registered consumers, said, "Today marks a new era of hope for consumers burdened with pending bills for years.&nbsp;
In the first phase of the scheme, registered consumers will receive a 100 per cent interest waiver and an additional 25 per cent rebate on the principal amount, significantly reducing their liabilities."
He said the registration process has been made simple and accessible. Consumers can register through the department's website www.uppcl.org, at the concerned division or sub-division office, Jan Seva Kendra, or any departmental cash counter.
The electricity department is conducting an extensive public awareness campaign to ensure that more people benefit from the scheme, he said.
The scheme will run in three phases: first phase from December 1-31, 2025; second phase from January 1-31, 2026, and the third phase from February 1-28, 2026.
In the first phase, 100 per cent interest waiver will be provided, along with 25 per cent rebate on the principal amount. In the second phase, the rebate on the principal amount will be 15 per cent, and in the third phase, it would be 10 per cent.
This one-time settlement facility is especially useful for consumers whose bills have become excessively high due to interest and surcharges, the statement said.
Sharma added that keeping consumers' financial conditions in mind, the government has provided an option of monthly installments -- of Rs 500 and Rs 750 -- so that they do not feel burdened.
The energy minister also instructed officials to hold camps to inform consumers about the scheme, ensure a smooth and simplified registration process, and make sure that no eligible individual is deprived of the benefits.
Sharma said that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas" and the "consistent consumer-friendly policies of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath", the electricity rates in Uttar Pradesh have not increased in the last six years.
Stating that the new relief scheme will significantly reduce the financial burden on consumers, he appealed to all defaulters not to miss the opportunity and take advantage of the scheme.
MLAs Guru Prasad Maurya, Deepak Patel, and Manoj Pandey, MLC Surendra Chaudhary, Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam MD Shambhu Kumar, Madhyanchal MD Ria Kejriwal, other local public representatives, electrical engineers, and a large number of public were present on the occasion, the statement added.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday appealed to the citizens to participate in efforts to protect vulnerable people from the ongoing cold wave, urging them to ensure domestic workers, sanitation staff, security guards and others around them have adequate arrangements to cope with the severe cold.&nbsp;
"The government is working with full sensitivity and promptness to protect people from the cold wave in north India. Officials have been instructed to adopt a humane and highly sensitive approach," he wrote in a post on X in Hindi.&nbsp;

Across the state, he added, night shelters are being operated at full capacity while arrangements for quilts, blankets, drinking water, bonfires and heaters have been ensured at these shelters.&nbsp;
"Examinees coming from other places and relatives of patients are also being provided shelter here. For the government, every human life is invaluable," the CM said.&nbsp;
He further said woollen clothes and blankets are being distributed to the needy through urban local bodies and tehsils, and mentioned that bonfires have been arranged at public places.&nbsp;
The UP CM also said that arrangements of blankets and bonfires are being made at cow shelters too, besides informing that extra security personnel are being deployed on roads to ensure travel safety amid fog.
"As a citizen, you too can become a partner in this collective effort. Look around you. Do ask once whether domestic helpers, sanitation workers, watchmen or others have adequate arrangements to protect themselves from the cold. Invite them for a cup of tea. Help the helpless reach government-run night shelters," Adityanath said.

Ahead of the winter session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said it would provide an opportunity for discussion on Vande Mataram on its 150th anniversary.
Speaking to reporters inside Vidhan Bhavan, Adityanath said the session, running from December 19-24, is crucial for members to raise issues in the House, advancing the interests of the people and the state's development.
"On this occasion, the Uttar Pradesh Legislature will also have the opportunity to hold an important discussion commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and to express gratitude to its composer," he said.
"This is because the date of the founding of Uttar Pradesh coincides with the date of the notification recognising Vande Mataram as the national song under the Constitution of India, making a discussion on this topic in the Uttar Pradesh Legislature particularly significant," Adityanath added.
Adityanath also said it was clearly conveyed during the all-party meeting that the government is fully prepared to discuss all issues.
He emphasised that the government maintains a positive approach towards development-related matters and expects cooperation from all parties to ensure the smooth conduct of the session.
He said that the country's largest legislature is steadily moving in the right direction, and when democratic institutions become forums for meaningful debate, elected representatives uphold public trust.
He added that while the government had wished for a longer session, many legislators are currently engaged in the special (intensive) revision of electoral rolls, an exercise crucial for maintaining the integrity and transparency of democracy.
Consequently, the session has been scheduled until December 24 to accommodate essential legislative business, supplementary demands, and deliberations on Vande Mataram.
Adityanath expressed confidence that the session would prove significant for the Uttar Pradesh Legislature and the overall development of the state.

A book launch ceremony for "Gatiman Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Sarkar Ke Bemisal 8 Saal," documenting the comprehensive transformation and development journey of the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, was held on Tuesday at the Visvesvaraya Auditorium here.
Addressing the gathering, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the chief minister are continuously working to realise the vision of India envisioned by the nation's brave freedom fighters after Independence.
He said that Uttar Pradesh's history and legacy have acquired a renewed identity, giving every citizen of the state a sense of pride.
History has seen saints who became kings, and today Uttar Pradesh is witnessing effective and ethical governance under the leadership of a "saint-statesman," Mahana said.
