Telangana woman officer arrested for accepting bribe, weeps on camera

An officer working with Tribal Welfare Engineering Department of Telangana was arrested on February 19 after she was caught red-handed for taking a bribe.

The incident took place in Hyderabad's Masab Tank area, where the officer named K Jaga Jyothi had demanded a bribe of ₹84,000 from a contractor to perform an official duty.

The video of her weeping on camera with the seized cash on her table went viral on social media.

Anti-corruption officials conducted a phenolphthalein test on Jyothi through which it found that the right hand fingers of the executive engineer tested positive.

What is Phenolphthalein?

Phenolphthalein test, a presumptive blood test wherein the chemical named phenolphthalein is used to detect the possible presence of haemoglobin on the surface.

When phenolphthalein breaks down, it turns pink in colour. So, if a person touches or holds documents or cash, traces of the phenolphthalein solution stick to their hands and the pink colour is seen when it comes in contact with a mild base.
