Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Disruption in Jharkhand's Kolhan Region

Heavy rains in Jharkhand's Kolhan region led to water-logging and river overflow, impacting daily life. Local authorities are providing aid, and alerts have been issued due to potential floods.

Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Disruption in Jharkhand's Kolhan Region

Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Jun 30 (PTI) Normal life in Jharkhand's Kolhan region was severely disrupted on Monday due to widespread water-logging caused by heavy rainfall. Kharkhai and Subarnarekha rivers overflowed their banks in Jamshedpur, surpassing the danger marks, according to an official statement. On Monday morning, the Kharkhai river was flowing at 130.65 meters, exceeding the 'red mark' of 129 meters at Adityapur bridge. Meanwhile, the Subarnarekha river's water level was at 121.60 meters, surpassing its danger level of 121.50 meters. The Kolhan region consists of East and West Singhbhum as well as Seraikela-Kharswan districts. JMM spokesperson and former MLA of Baharagora constituency, Kunal Sarangi, noted that several houses in Baharagora have been inundated, and traffic has been disrupted due to ongoing rainfall. Sarangi visited the affected areas, including Patpur, Sakra and Domjudi panchayats, on Sunday and reported that water-logging has hampered daily life and submerged several houses. He appealed to the district administration to provide food and relocate families to safer locations. Sarangi, along with district officials, distributed food items, tarpaulin, and plastic sheets to affected families. The district administrations of East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan have issued alerts due to potential water level increases in Kharkhai and Subarnarekha rivers. East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi urged residents in river catchment areas to stay vigilant and follow official advisories amidst the threat of rising water levels from relentless rainfall. He advised residents to move to safety if flood-like conditions develop. Satyarthi instructed municipal and BDO officials to maintain vigilance and sought community cooperation. Residents are encouraged to reach out to the district control room for any assistance. Simultaneously, the Seraikela-Kharswan administration has kept officials on alert following water releases from the Rairangpur dam in Odisha. Seraikela-Kharswan Deputy Commissioner Nitish Kumar Singh alerted district executives and technical staff to stay prepared for emergencies. He instructed officials to pinpoint sensitive areas near rivers and the Chandil dam, using public address systems to alert residents. The DC also directed the district civil surgeon to ensure health centres are on high alert, with mobile medical units and ambulances ready for emergencies.
