Sajjan Kumar receives life sentence for his role in 1984 Anti-Sikh violence

Sajjan Kumar, a former Congress MP, was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The judgement was delivered by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja. Kumar has appealed the verdict, and the case is currently pending in the Supreme Court.

In addition, Kumar faces two other pending cases in the Delhi High Court related to the riots. Out of 587 FIRs filed in connection with the 1984 violence, only 28 have led to convictions, with around 400 people found guilty.

Roughly 50 individuals were convicted of murder during these proceedings, including Kumar.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots erupted following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. Her assassination was preceded by Operation Blue Star, a military operation in June 1984 aimed at removing Sikh militants, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a sacred site for Sikhs.
