'Prostitute' controversy: Congress leader apologises to sex workers, day after comparison with rebel MLAs

Congress leader BK Hariprasad on 18 January 2023 apologised to the sex worker community a day after his speech sparked a controversy.

On 17 January in Hosapete, the Karnataka politician had reportedly compared MLAs who switch sides to prostitutes.

"When you didn't give a clear mandate, we formed a coalition govt. We call by different names a woman who sells her body for food, we call her a prostitute. I leave it to you what you'll call MLAs who sold themselves. Teach a lesson to local MLA in polls," Hariprasad had reportedly said.

"You have to teach a lesson to the local MLA who sold everything including his self-respect," he had said while referring to Anand Singh.

A day later, Hariprasad said that his statement had been misquoted by the BJP. He added that he has great respect for sex workers and apologised for hurting sentiments.
