Madhavi Raje, Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia's mother passes away

Madhavi Raje Scindia, mother of Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia passed away on Wednesday at Delhi's AIIMS hospital. She was 70.

She breathed her last at 9.28 am on Wednesday.

News agency ANI, citing a source said Raje was suffering from pneumonia and had been on ventilator support for the last few days.

“It is with profound sadness that we wish to inform that Rajmata (Madhavi Raje) is no more. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s mother and the Rajmata of the Gwalior royal family, Madhavi Raje was under treatment at AIIMS, Delhi over the last few months. Her condition was said to be critical over the past couple of months. She breathed her last at 9.28 am today. Om Shanti!” read an official statement from Scindia’s office.

In 1966, she married Rajkumar Madhavrao Scindia from the Sindhiya royal family of Gwalior. According to Marathi tradition, her name changed after marriage and she became Madhavi Raje Scindia.

Initially, she was referred to as Maharani, but after Madhavrao's demise, she began to be called Rajmata.

Madhavi Raje's husband, former Union Minister Madhavrao Scindia, passed away in a plane accident near Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh on September 30, 2001.
