An Army major and his wife have been arrested in Assam's Dima Hasao district for allegedly torturing their domestic help, a top police officer said on Tuesday.
Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar said they received information on Sunday that the minor girl, who had accompanied the couple to Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, was "tortured brutally". According to a NDTV report quoting sources, the girl's medical report revealed a fractured nose and deep cuts on her tongue. She was allegedly starved by the couple, who would make her eat from the garbage bin when she asked for food.&nbsp; "She kept me locked me in a room, pulled my hair, and beat me. She was angry with my efficiency in household chores and beat me with a belan (rolling pin). She would strip me. She would beat me, and when I bled, she forced me to lick my own blood," the girl recounted the horror.
Mr Kumar said a case has been registered at the Haflong Police Station under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
"During investigation, prima facie evidence was found against the Army major and his wife, and they were arrested in connection with the case and forwarded to judicial custody," the SP said.
He added that necessary assistance is being provided to the girl, including medical treatment. "Further probe is underway. Strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation," Mr Kumar said.

The RAF has denied making casteist remarks against protesters in Imphal who were agitating over the killing of two Meitei students.

The CRPF/RAF has refuted making casteist remarks while dealing with demonstrators protesting the killing of two students who had been missing since July 6, Manipur Police has said.
The clarification came after a video went viral where an RAF personnel was allegedly heard stating, "It's not our community, do whatever you want (humara jaati nahi hain, kuch bhi karo," made rounds on social media inviting widespread condemnation from social media users.
In a post on 'X' on Tuesday night, police said, "A video is being circulated on WhatsApp groups/Twitter showing that RAF personnel while dealing with violent mob are passing casteist remarks. The voice in the clip is not of RAF personnel. It appears that video maker has intentionally recorded casteist remarks in his own voice to tarnish the image of RAF troops. The alleged video has been made to defame and discourage the RAF personnel who are performing their duty with high level of dedication and sincerity." "RAF personnel remained deployed in different parts of Imphal city for law and order duty throughout the day and even during night hours. RAF personnel works on the principle of use of minimum force and graded response to the situation" it said.
"The RAF troops has been diligently serving the nation and playing a pivotal role in restoration of law and order situation in Manipur," it added.

Altogether 45 students, many of them girls, were injured in Imphal Valley on Tuesday as police fired tear gas shells and baton-charged protesters demonstrating against the killing of two youths who were allegedly kidnapped in July.

According to the police report, the couple was later spotted by armed Kuki militants who took them to an unknown destination before executing them.
As per the initial probe, the couple, who were in a relationship, had eloped on July 6. They were spotted at a stone quarry near Laika before reaching Jouzangtek. Around 8am, Singh picked up the girl from her tuition centre at Keishampat Mutum Leikhai in Imphal.
The 17-year-old girl's father had filed a case of abduction against her 20-year-old lover.

BJP president J P Nadda was safely evacuated from a Lord Ganesh pandal in Pune where a fire broke out when he was offering prayers along with the party's Maharashtra unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Tuesday evening, police said.
Visuals from the scene showed Nadda being safely escorted out of the venue even as the fire engulfed the top portion of the makeshift pandal in the Lokmanya Nagar area in the heart of the city.
No casualty was reported in the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Suhail Sharma said after the fire broke out during Nadda's visit to the Ganesh pandal, "police officers at duty immediately responded with local support and fire brigade units were deployed".
A fire brigade official said the blaze may have been caused by fireworks at the pandal set up by the Sane Guruji Ganesh Mitra Mandal.
Pune city BJP president Dhiraj Ghate and security personnel were seen taking Nadda out of the pandal, a replica of Ujjain's famous Mahakaleshwar Temple.
As soon as the fire broke out, rains started in the area which helped douse the flames.
DCP Sharma said the BJP president left the spot to attend 'aarti' at another Lord Ganesh pandal in the Kothrud area of the city.
"The fire was successfully contained and no person sustained injuries," he added.

INDIA has formed a 13-member panel to act as the alliance's highest decision-making body

The opposition INDIA alliance on Friday finalised a 13-member committee comprising members of various parties that will function as the bloc's highest decision-making body and will start work on seat sharing immediately, sources said.
Congress' K C Venugopal, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee and Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut are part of the opposition panel.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, AAP's Raghav Chadha, Samajwadi Party's Javed Ali Khan, JDU's Lallan Singh, CPI leader D Raja, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and PDP's Mehbooba Mufti are also part of coordination panel, the sources said.
The panel will act as the highest decision-making body of the bloc and start work on seat sharing, they added.
Seat sharing will be finalised by September 30, the sources said.

The Biren Singh government has declared the entire Manipur state "disturbed area" in an official notification on Wednesday.
As per India Today, except for 19 specific police station areas, the entire state has been declared a "disturbed area".
State capital Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Leimakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching, and Jiribam are included in the list of 'disturbed areas'
Pertinently, the decision comes following violence in Imphal over kidnapping and killing of two youths in the state. Their picture surfaced on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Protests against the killing of two students by militants in Manipur continued on Wednesday

Protest rallies erupted in the streets of Imphal with thousands of students sloganeering against the kidnapping and killing of two youths for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the women wing of Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), the apex Kuki body, staged a demonstration in Churachandpur against the delay of ordering CBI inquiry into the killing and rape of tribals during the nearly five-month-long ethnic violence in Manipur.
Manipur Police, CRPF and RAF personnel were seen deployed in strength throughout Imphal Valley in anticipation of possible protests and violence.
"We are holding a peaceful protest against the kidnapping and killing of fellow students and we have asked everyone to wear black badges as a mark of protest," said Thokchom Khogendro Singh, a student leader.
Police officials said they are "keeping a track of the situation".

On the other hand, ITLF women's wing convenor Mary Jone, who led the protests in Churachandpur, wondered why such inquiries were not initiated into the killings and rapes of Kukis.
"This rally is against the prompt action of the CBI into the killing of the two teenagers, who were in love and had eloped. However, there were many incidents of tribal women being raped, paraded naked and our men being killed but no CBI inquiry was conducted.
"Why this bias against us? We demand CBI inquiry into incidents of violence against tribals," she said.
The rally, in which several thousands of women took part, started at Lamka public ground, went through Tipaimukh Road and I B Road and converged at the site for Wall of Remembrance where dummy coffins of the people killed in the ethnic violence are kept.
A clash occurred on Tuesday night between RAF personnel and locals protesting the killing of two students, who had been missing since July 6, prompting the law enforcers to lob tear gas shells and fire rubber bullets at the agitators and baton-charge them, leaving 45 of the protesters, mostly students, injured.
Although the state government has declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday, students of some Imphal-based institutions vowed to congregate at their schools.
Following the clashes, the state government has re-imposed a ban on internet mobile services with immediate effect till 7.45 pm of October 1 to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours.
It was recently lifted after more than four months of imposition on May 3 when the ethnic clashes began.
The state government has declared a holiday for schools on September 27 and 29 in view of the prevailing law and order situation, with September 28 being a public holiday in view of Milad Un-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's birthday).
More than 175 people have been killed and several hundreds injured since ethnic clashes broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.&nbsp;

The temple, which is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, spans over 183 acres. As per PTI, it has one main shrine, 12 sub-shrines, nine shikhars (spire-like structures), and nine pyramidal shikhars.
Nearly two million cubic feet of stone was used in the construction and was sourced from different sites around the world, including limestone from Bulgaria and Turkey; Marble from Greece, Turkey and Italy; Granite from India and China; Sandstone from India and other decorative stones from Europe, Asia, Latin America.
The Brahma Kund, a traditional Indian stepwell, contains water from over 300 bodies of water from around the world, including the holy rivers of India and all 50 states of the US, news agency PTI reported.
