Plea in SC to stop election commissioners' appointment under new law

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the appointment of chief election commissioner and other election commissioners under the recently enacted law.

In her plea, Congress leader Jaya Thakur opposed the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Act.

Thakur has sought to ensure that the appointments be done as per the Supreme Court judgment, which had recommended a panel comprising chief justice of India, the prime minister and the Leader of Opposition for the purpose.

The plea has been filed at a time when some media reports have claimed a panel meeting for appointment of election commissioners will be held on March 15.

As per the new law, the panel will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will have a Union minister and the Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as members.

Two vacancies of election commissioners came about following the resignation of Arun Goel and Anup Chandra Pandey's retirement.
